The most updated worldwide companies have become aware of the fact that if they do not get used to continued innovation in order to meet the needs of their clients, they will be left aside by this always changing world, and their clients will prefer to go on with other more dynamic, versatile enterprises ready to offer them innovation skills for each one of their processes. In order to comply with some of these requirements on behalf of customers’ satisfaction, COLINAGRO has decided to create its own Innovation Department. But, what does innovation mean?
There are different definitions around the term innovation; some of them are:
Innovation is the approach between the offering of research and development activities and final addressees. (Ceneo, 2002.)
Innovation is the art of converting ideas and knowledge into products, new or advanced processes, acknowledged or valued by the market. (University of Nebrija, 2002).
To convert ideas and knowledge into wealth. (University of Nebrija, 2002.)
According to COLINAGRO, the Innovation Department must accomplish objectives like developing, collecting, proposing, and promoting ideas for new processes, business lines, new markets and products based upon the current and future market needs.
As it is noted, the distinct scopes of the Innovation Department demand a work team involving the entire organization. This new department is to perform functions that are similar to those previously mentioned; however, one of its prime duties shall be that of serving as a provider and mentor in an effort to make good ideas transcend into successful projects. These ideas should be collected from all of the Company’s departments, particularly from the Regional Managers and Technical Advisors, since they hold a direct contact with final users and know from first hand which their needs are. This does not necessarily mean that many ideas may not also come out from the Head Offices, but it is our customers who, through the Marketing Department, endorse these proposals, as there is no worse mistake than to launch a product or service without previously knowing thoroughly the needs of the market. (Porter, M. 2000).
